Scratch Built Shanty

The following is my assembly of a scratch built Crossing Shanty as described to the members of our club (HOT G Gaugers, Austin, Texas) at a recent scratch building seminar facilitated by Bob Miller, one of our members who is a master modeler & builder.

The "kit" given to us at the start of the seminar was graciously put together by our instructor which included four pre-cut walls, precut "door", pre-cut roof panels, and all of the necessary bulk Balsa wood that would be needed to assemble the structure. Also most graciously provided in the "kit" were a sanding block and two other very useful tools, a 1/8" pointed wood dowel for excess glue removal and a 1/4" x 3/8" x 3 1/2" wood block for aligning and adjusting pieces during assembly where fingers won't or are to big to reach. (found during my assembly to be extremely useful tools) Other tools necessary for the project include; a box knife, single edge razor blades and a metal ruler.

All of the buildings pictured above were scratch built by Bob Miller and now grace club member Ronnie's layout.

The building above (one of the instructor Bob Miller's completed projects) was on display as a sample for us to use as a visual aid during the construction of our own creations.

Above are my partially completed (less finished roof) attempt at scratch building the Crossing Shanty as shown above.

A complete series of pictures of Bob Miller's prototype was taken by Randall Howell and posted on his website please visit Randall's site for a more complete view of Bob Miller's completed Crossing Shanty.
