Door details

The assembly of the door and windows is one of the more meticulous tasks. The installation of  the "door" on this building is non operating and simply a oversized piece of wood glued behind the door cutout. The door is a series of pieces built up on and around the opening. The door frame and door panels are cut from 1/4 x 1/16 Balsa wood. Pre painting the pieces prior to installing but after cutting them to length is a little more time consuming but improves the look of the finished product. The door is built up step by step in the following photos.

If not already installed during the wall assembly and painting step, install the oversized piece behind the cutout of the door opening.

Next paint the door to the desired color, you can be a little sloppy in the corners because they will be covered up as the door is assembled.

* This is a demonstration piece using scraps not cut to full length*

Next pre-paint and install the door frame from 1/4 x 1/16 Balsa (if you cut the ends with a slight bevel the corners will match up better and have less gap.

Next pre-paint and install the door panels and inserts. * Again this is a sample piece and I intentionally did not paint the edges of the door panels so the would show up better in the picture*

Now pre-painted 1/16" square balsa is used to complete the door frame.

The finished product with the doorknob installed. The doorknob is a brass brad nail pushed into a pre-drilled undersize hole, this process is easier and much safer than trying to hammer it on to your finished model. Notice that on my door some of the gray paint from the walls that also coated the door since I installed it first prior to painting the walls is showing through the brown paint painted on the door, I could have touched it up but I thought it gave it character so I left it as is.
