Roof and Finishing Touches
I took a while to finally decide on a roof type. I had three basic roof types choices to pick from, Cedar Shake, Corrugated or Shingled. I chose shingled for a couple of reasons, first while driving on an overpass the other day, I looked down, and realized you could not really make out the shingles you could only notice lines on the roof. I thought of scribing lines in some roofing felt then happened upon what I think is the perfect material for shingle roofs. The material is called Aerial Paneling and it is used for making large temporary "x" on the ground for alignment marks in aerial photo surveys, this material is a fiber reinforced plastic material with a vertical and horizontal ridge pattern making 3/32" squares (see pic below). I happen to work in the surveying industry and was able to obtain a sample of this material for testing, it usually comes in 50yd rolls 6 to 24 inches wide. One side is white and is the primary side used in aerial surveys but the other side is black and perfect for modeling a shingled roof. If you desire a shingled roof other than black I feel certain the white side could be painted any desired color, I just have not tried it.

Installation of roof was done by gluing the material to the pre painted roof with Elmer's Weather-Tite wood glue, other similar adhesives would probably work equally well.

I cut one edge of the material straight with the ridges of the material and aligned this edge with the edge of the roof, I left the extra for trimming because I knew my roof was probably not square the excess was later trimmed with an x-acto blade.

After trimming I painted the edge of the roof white to match the trim on the other parts of the shack.

I then painted the roof ridge (a piece of .015 x 5/32" brass angle) black with Floquil model paint and attached it to the ridge with the Elmer's Weather-tite glue, this covered up the mis-matched roof and gave the shack a nice finish.

Well that's about all now it's time to find a place for it on the layout.
