The Saturday Dining Conspiracy: March, 2006

March 4, 2006: Home Slice Pizza.

Home Slice
1415 South Congress
444-PIES
30.24927° N, 97.74967° W

Pepper grinder rating: 0.
Men's room rating: 2.
WiFi: Not noted.

Dwight's comments:

Quite good thin crust pizza, with okay seating and not really good parking. Very much in the same league as Rounder's Pizza. I'd gladly go back, but probably not on a weekend night.

Lawrence's comments:

I like it! Pretty good "New York Style" (i.e., thin, non-crispy crust) pizza, and pretty good service, in a crowded, fast-paced, South Congress joint. (They have a walk-up window, and you could frequently walk over and see the working girls picking up their evening meal.)

Some caveats:

  1. It's pretty crowded, and parking is scarce.
  2. The prices they charge are a bit higher than you're going to find elsewhere in town, mainly because they can (see Point 1 again).
  3. Appetizers and desserts are somewhat limited.
  4. I don't see this as much of a destination restaurant, more a "Hey, I'm on South Congress and hungry for pizza" alternative. And as such it fits the bill admirably, but I'd never drive here over, say, Reale's.

Worth trying if you're in the area.

March 11, 2006: None.

Dwight's comments:

Various people were off doing various things. I could tell you what they were doing, but then I'd have to kill you.

March 18, 2006: None.

Dwight's comments:

Lawrence was doing the Turkey City thing again, while my folks and I went on an epic trek to the Walburg Restaurant.

March 25, 2006: Reed's Jazz & Supper Club.

Reed's Jazz & Supper Club
9901 Capitol of Texas Highway, Suite 150
342-7977

Pepper grinder rating: 0. (At these prices, I expect a pepper grinder.)
Men's room rating: 2. (This had the potential to be excellent, but then they went with the faux marble for the stalls rather thanĘthe real stuff. Normally I wouldn't complain, but at these prices, I expect real marble, and you can already see the staining and wear on the fake stuff. Penny-wise, pound foolish.)
WiFi: There doesn't appear to be WiFi associated with the restaurant itself: from our table, though, I was able to connect to SSID "avant", which I think belongs to another business in the center.

Dwight's comments:

First let me say: I had a fairly good meal at Reed's. I thought the thick-cut calamari strips were a novel way of presenting the dish, I liked the sausage stuffed mushrooms, but I did think the wedge salad was kind of disappointing. My bacon-wrapped venison was good (though not as good as I've had at Mirabelle), but the duck confit risotto served with it was excellent. The creamed spinach side dish was also very nice.

Second, let me say: several of the other attendees told me later that they were disappointed with their meals. All of them got steaks, and all of them felt the quality of the steak was below what they expected, relative to the prices they paid.

I'm not sure what to make of this. I'm inclined to think that you can get a good meal at Reed's, but you should probably order with care. You may also be better off going to a real steak place, or even North by Northwest, for steak.

Lawrence's comments:

Reed's Jazz and Supper Club offers up exceptional steaks, very good service, and a fine atmosphere at stratospheric prices. This is Ruth's Chris level steak at Ruth's Chris pricing.

My rib eye steak itself was excellent, and I had it done as a "Steak Oscar", with crab meat and Hollandaise sauce on top (though I had them hold the asparagus). The crab cakes, the calamari, and my gumbo were all very good. Also, it should be noted that while they have live jazz downstairs, the upstairs is very-well sound insulated.

As for drawbacks: I expected more (both portion and flavor-wise) from the caramel white chocolate cheesecake. And my Caesar salad was merely adequate, which is disappointing at these prices.

Perhaps the best thing about Reed's (other than the steak) is the location. No longer do you have to drive downtown to get a truly fine steak. If you've got the bucks, they've got the meal.
