Dwight's comments:

Very good rolls (comparable to Rounder's "garlic knots", but with a bit less garlic) and quite good thin crust pizza. A pretty good choice if you live out near Pflugerville, or are driving that way, or are willing to drive that way. I can't vouch for the various pastas, but I wouldn't mind returning sometime soon to try those. (Especially since Baris is quite near a good firing range.)

Lawrence's comments:

As a neighborhood Italian place, I sort of like it. While it can't compare to Reale's, you get decent food at an affordable price. Appetizers (garlic cheese bread, fried cheese, hot wings, rolls) were all cheap and decent, if not terribly exciting. Ditto for the salads and the cheesecake.

The pizza was pretty good, but they could have been a bit more generous with the ingredients.

While it lacks the wide variety of desserts offered at Venice Cafe, it was cheaper and the service was a lot quicker.

Nothing I'd drive out of my way for, but a good choice if you live near Pflugerville, and I'd like to try some of their Italian dishes at some point.

Dwight's comments:

Passible chain barbecue. Rudy's is much better, but Rudy's doesn't offer fries as a side.

Lawrence's comments:

Before the review itself, a clarification: When I said that "the next time we visit them should be shortly after David Letterman's Cold Day in Hell Special,", I specifically meant the 183 location. This one is significantly better.

Better, but not necessarily great. They offer up decent pork and beef ribs, nice moist brisket, and sausage at least as what you can get just about everywhere else in town. They also offer a good variety of sides: my fries were fine, while my banana pudding (yes, you can get it as a side) was unexceptional.

Still, two caveats: Rudy's, just up 360, offers better (albeit significantly more expensive) BBQ, and they seem to do a better job with lunch than dinner. That said, this is a very solid BBQ joint with decent food at a good price. The chain's management should send somewhere here to figure out what the hell is wrong with the north location.

March 19, 2005: Sagiang.

Dwight's comments:

I don't want to be snide and dismissive: Sagiang is a perfectly nice place.

But it is also just like almost every other Vietnamese restaurant on every other corner in town: there's nothing that makes it stand out from any of a dozen or so other places.

Lawrence's comments:

It's tempting to resort to Lawrence Person's Handy Pho Review Construction Set again, but that would be a bit unfair. There was one thing which stood out at Sagiang: the beef and pork skewers were quite delicious (although the beef was pretty skimpy), and it would be worth going back to get a plate of that, if they have one.

On the other hand, nothing really distinguished the bun (i.e. thin noodles) dish I had, and it was a bit smaller than the pho-joint average.

OK if you're in the area, but nothing to make you abandon Kim Phung, and I like Mongolian Grille in the same center better.

March 26, 2005: Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant.

1525 Cypress Creek Rd. (Cedar Park)
219-5244

Pepper grinder rating: 0.
Men's room rating: 2.
WiFi: No.

Dwight's comments:

The service was glitchy, the food was mediocre, and I can't come up with a good reason to go back.

Lawrence's comments:

Yet another decent neighborhood TexMex place. Good, basic fajita nachos, albeit a touch pricey for the quantity (not that you can really complain; they spell out the quantity on the menu), and good chorizo flammeda. My "The Chef Recommends" beef dish was good but a little on the bland side; I'd like to try a spicier version of this. Service was generally good, except for forgetting to bring out our tortillas.

Worth vising if you live in the area, but it's nothing I'd drive out of the way for.
