Mount'un Man Mac In Summer Gear
And Cannon (The Preacher)
Tomahawk In Hand
We live on a small ranch surrounded by about
6,000 acres of land that is
pretty much the same as it was thousands of
years ago (heavily wooded).
There is some pasture land here and there, but
theres lots of woods,
tanks (small lakes), and animals in between.
Oh yeah, there's also lots of
fire ants and scorpions. All of our pieces are
surface finds, mostly from
our 1 1/2 mile dirt/flint road, seasonal creek
bed and walks in the woods.
The road was surfaced about 60 or 70 years ago
from a flint quarry that
different Comanche tribes had used for generations
as their flint source and
camping grounds. Some of the artifacts I have
found have dated from the
late archaic period, 800 BC to the late prehistoric
period, 1000 AD. A few
have dated back to early archaic period, 5000
BC.
Most of the artifacts are from the Comanche
tribes in central Texas.
They ruled this area for hundreds of years.
They were a nomadic,
warring tribe. At one time they were at war
with the comacheros, the
Mexicans, white settlers, the US army, and all
other Indians. You've
got to admire that.
The Tonkawas also were in this area but they were at constant war
with the Comanches. When the early settlers
showed up, the Tonkawas
were very friendly and eventually they always
settled close to a white
community and gave up the nomadic life.
Bastrop, a small town a little larger that ours
about 13 miles away,
had a cannon in the towns square in the late
1700's to mid 1800's.
When ever a Comanche deprivation took place
or an attack appear
imminent, the cannon was fired. If you were
close enough, you'd ride to
Bastrop, to either go after the Comanches or
to band together for defense.
If you were too far away; for the cannon can
be heard for a hundred
miles, then you would dig in for a fight. It
was their early warning signal.
