Coalition is Dead

The Reagan coalition is dead.

Thanks to incalcitrant right wing media manipulators McCain has been declared the nominee of the republican party for president. McCain is the antithesis of what the coalition should have accepted, but the splintering of the coalition has had this result. Whom can we blame for this disaster? The list is endless, but I'll stick with two categories: The elected republicans and the moral majority republicans.

The vast majority of republicans just want to be left alone. They want the government out of their lives. By nature, these people stay out of politics. I'd say this even goes for a sizeable chunk of democrats as well. But both parties are now ruined by extremists. Democrats are controlled by marxist (as opposed to the more extreme Stalinists which are coming next) communists and socialists. Republicans are now broken up by, not yet controlled by, splinters of xenophobics and religious intolerants.

The descent of the democrats into marxism culminated in the elevation of Pelosi to Speaker of the House. This was a long time in coming since the death of Kennedy. It has a long and well known story that I won't go into further here.

What's happened on the other side is that the new media, talk radio and fox news, have driven the agenda. Illegal immigration was only a minor issue in this country for decades. How did it suddenly loom into prominence a few years ago? Radical elements, mostly led by pseudo marxists and labor unions (am I being redundant?) staged a national protest. They had tried many times before and they had fizzled. For some reason two or three years ago their attempt worked slightly better.

But it wasn't that big until the nutcases screamed and hollered against them and egged them on to even bigger rallies. It only lasted a week or so, but the impact hasn't left us yet. Now the mindless Laura Ingrahams, insulting Sean Hannities, and other luminaries in the spot light fanned the flames of xenophobia and made what was a non-issue into a number one – for them anyway.

And what a foolish issue it was. No matter what anyone says or does, Spanish speaking people are not going away. They've always been here, they were living in many states before any Americans lived there. They are good people. Attacking immigration with the ferocity that they did can only drive hispanics or latinos (depending on whom you're talking to is what you call them) away from the party. Not all hispanics vote, but many do, and their children certainly will in the future. This trend cannot be stopped.

Now, opposing illegal immigration is innocuous enough. It's a no brainer, even though some of us, like me, think there should be no immigration control. Come here, all of you who wish to be free. Just don't expect me to support you. The ingrahams couldn't be satisfied with keeping criminals out. They became obsessed with labeling all illegal immigrants as criminals, accusing them of causing all traffic fatalities, burglaries, and other crimes. Law abiding hispanics aren't likely to be drawn to the party that way. With hispanics growing and growing, expected to become a majority in a few decades, this is political suicide. The hanniities seem to think they can stick their finger in the dike and stop the inevitable. Fools.

The Coulters and Ingrahams and Hannities had another drum to beat. To them, you aren't welcome in the party, not even the country, if you aren't a protestant. And a bible thumping one at that. Incredibly, they insist that the country is a christian country, and rail at the anti-establishment clause in the Constitution. While we're at war with Islam and sharia law, they want to instill a watered down version of their own christian laws to control our people. They want religious symbols in our courts. They want tax payers to fund religious displays. They want to inflict their beliefs on the rest of us. They don't seem to get the entire point of the first amendment.

But they aren't alone in the blame for this disaster. The congress and the president have plenty on their own backs. The president failed to lead. He did nothing to coral the party, keep it along principles that the coalition could support. He let each faction run wild without keeping them focused. And more than anything, he did nothing to stop the gluttonous slopping at the public trough by congress. Bush's congress has been the most disgusting spenders in the history of this nation. The very point that kept this coalition together was its stated goal of controlling the spending, limiting the size and scope of government. They not only failed to keep to that standard, they created an opposite standard. There is no reason for anyone to support them. They haven't deserved it.

So, we have a party that has betrayed its stated purpose. We have a faction that is driving out dissenters on noncritical and unwinning issues. There is nothing left. The party has been destroyed in eight years by many things, but mostly by a failure of leadership. George Bush must take the blame but he was abetted by many others.

Now we're at the point where a man who has made a career of spitting at the party and its stated goals, who has dedicated his life to destroying freedom of speech, who has been in the middle of corruption unparalleled is now the nominee. He's so bad that even the usually sensible Limbaugh is refusing to support him.

The country is screwed. The marxists will be unfettered starting next year. The cold war has been finally lost. Kruschev has buried us. The Reagan Coalition is dead.
