Big Brother's Homepage
Welcome to the homepage of Big Brother.
You ask yourself "There is no such thing is Big Brother, is there?"
Allow me to introduce myself. I am the "Kindler and Gentler" Big Brother, but there are others that are not.
I would never do anything that would intentionally harm your computer; but I could. Others will just for fun.
First you must have a little background about Big Brother, in case you forgot. Remember the book by George Orwell titled "1984"? That story was about the real nasty Big Brother. Remember Big Brother watched everything you said and did; knew all of you goings on. Nothing was secret. Well, it's time to wake up and smell Big Brother. Big Brother is real!!!
"NO WAY" you say to yourself. Nothing like that could ever happen today!
Take a big whif I say, that smell is Big Brother. Clear and odorless so you don't even know he is there, watching your every move, hearing your every word, reading all your electronic mail.
"How could that be" you say to yourself
Lets start with something really simple. Here you are poking around the internet, thinking you are minding your own business, snooping at others web pages (does that make you big brother too?). Things seem normal enough, you click on a page location, the screen changes colors, blinks a couple of times, images and text come across the screen, you are having a wonderfull evening. Did you ever stop to think whats going on inside your computer? Your little haven for personal letters, income tax programs crammed full of private information about yourself, your spouse, your children. What about those little bootleg programs you loaded on your computer that you borrowed from your friend. "No one will ever know" you said to yourself.
Remember the last time you logged off of AOL and your computer said "Updating system files" while you waited to log off? What the heck was that all about. Did you ever think about what was happening when somebody on the other end of your connecting downloaded a program that self expanded, autoexecuted, automatically deleted unwanted files, updated your system files and then shut down? How did that other system know how and when to "update" your computer? Pretty clever don't you think. Did you ever think that the other end of the connection scanned your hard disk to find out what version of the software you were running? Wake up and smell Big Brother in action.
Think about this for example. Are you running Windows 98? Have you ever clicked start, update Windows? If you have you know that your computer is scanned for programs and then new updated versions are automatically installed to your computer. Whats up with that. Could it be.......let me guess.........is it Big Brother?
Did you ever go to a web page and have a notice pop up on your screen that the other server wants to set a cookie? If you haven't, you don't have your browser set to notify you everytime a cookie is set.
"How was I supposed to know I had that option of accepting or denying a cookie" you ask yourself. Lets see, why didn't you know that, could it be......, let me guess........, maybe it's..... BIG BROTHER?
"What's a cookie" you wonder. Could it be a little file containg a piece of computer programming that passes information about you and your computer to a particular server everytime you go to a particular web site? You bet it is. It passes information along about how many times you have visited, when you last visited, where you visited in particular, what ever that little webmaster on the other end dreams up to have sent back and forth over the internet. (Could the internet be Big Brother?)
Remember when you were happy with Netscape, everything worked perfectly. One day you installed windows 95, the next thing you knew Microsoft Internet Explorer was running. "What the heck happened" you said. Lets see, what happed, could it be......, let me guess........, maybe it's..... BIG BROTHER? (Could Microsoft be Big Brother?) Thats absurd you say. Bill Gates isn't the only employee at Microsoft.
"This can't be" you say to yourself. This kind of thing just doesn't go on, or does it. I know that actions speak louder than words so how about a little action. Did you ever click on a link and nothing happened? Did you ever wonder what was the matter. Maybe something happened and you didn't know it. Click on SHOW ME and find out how easy it is for someone else to scan your entire computer without you ever knowing it. After you are made aware, click BACK to return and continue. Suprised? You should be, people copy files from your computer all the time and you don't even know it.
Lets go Back Where We Came From!
Bye!
