About This Writing Sample

OmniTerm Thin Client User's Manual

Chapter 1 is a quick-start set of instructions that describe unpacking, connecting system components, Ethernet connection, identifying and recording the IP address information for the unit - and other relevant networking information (DHCP/non-DHCP, TFTP addresses, etc.); entering offline setup mode to enter IP addresses and other system information; selecting the proper display language; setting up TN5250/E sessions; setting up monitor type; and preliminary printer configuration.

Chapter 2 is an in-depth reference for Offline Setup Mode that is essentially a screen-by-screen reference for all system offline settings including flash updates, and troubleshooting information for this mode.

Chapter 3 provides reference information for advanced printer functions, local password protections, and browsing functions - those functions dependent upon connection to the host system.

Chapter 4 provides information about the client's behavior during all active emulation sessions including exception messages, tables explaining status line feedback, and programming the client for Record/Play mode.

Appendix A provides complete information regarding all key functions. At the time, it was nearly impossible to find usable graphic images of keys. Note that all of the keys represented in the reference tables were hand-drawn by yours truly!

Appendix B is an Error Code table.

Appendix C describes the miseries of CMOS battery failure and how to recover from it.

Appendix D provides detailed instructions about configuring client TFTP for flash updates - and how to perform the updates themselves.

About OmniTerm

OmniTerm is a TN5250/TN5250E client you can add to your Ethernet LAN for client sessions on your AS/400 Midrange system. It's very cool, and this had to be one of the smoothest operating little systems I've worked with. Typical of NLynx! You can reach them at www.nlynx.com for more information. You'll find some of my documentation on-line, too.
