Wake Island and On to Japan

A-6Es on the flightline in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. The aircrew got to play for two days, while we worked to get the jets ready for the rest of the trek across the Pacific. It's not as easy as it sounds, and the aircrew put up with a grueling flight.

I think this is Sgt Avery, one of our hydraulics mechs. I like this picture of a Marine tending his jet in the rain. This is Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

We finally made it halfway across the pond to Wake Island. There really is very little to the island beyond what you can see here. This is Gunny Roscoe and Sgt Fitch horsing around since I had my camera with me.

This picture shows why I got the name "Skyler." The goggles and cranial set were said to make me resemble Skyler Fishhawk of the "Shoe" comic strip. Skyler's uncle kept sending him to summer camp, but the camp always turned out to be a Marine Corps base, like Camp Pendleton.

I even got a spare few minutes to run over and see the memorial behind the little airport/museum. The previous night I went wandering all over the island, even to the places forbidden to transient personnel. The island is so tiny, and the number of people there so few (I'm guessing 20 at most) that this rule was begging to be broken. Besides, there was some history to see, and I'm sure I'll never get a chance to go back there. We went snorkeling and found a Japanese tank chassis where it ran off of a defunct bridge.

Trouble Shooters on Wake.
